National Seminar cum workshop

Physics Department has arranged a visit for the students of M.Sc (Physics) 2nd year to attend the two days ‘National Seminar cum workshop ‘ organized by Dev Samaj College for woman, Firozpur. On the very 1st day, Dr. B.K Sapra (Scientist, BARC Mumbai) delivered an expert talk on nano-technology. In the 2nd session, Dr. V Bala Ram (Emiratus, NGRI, Hyderabad) guided the students on Cosmo Chemistry, Geo Chemistry. After the lunch break, Dr. B.K Sahoo (BARC, Mumbai) has an interactive session on Radon measurement and its methods. In the last session Dr. Krishankant (Principal, Aggarwal College, Ballabhgarh) shared his vast knowledge regarding Nuclear traces in solids. In the evening, a Visit to Hussaniwala border was arranged by the host college. Students and staff members enjoyed there.

On the second day, Dr. Lalit Mohan Sharma shared his views regarding safe limits of Carcogenic Radio Nuclides and their effects. In the 2nd session, Dr. O.P Pandey (AP, Thapar University) discussed on the Need of energy. After that a workshop was arranged where students learn about the “Active methods of measuring Radon in air, Water and Soil using RAD7 instrument”. Overall this visit was very good for academic point of view. Students also gave positive feedback for this industrial visit.

Extension Lecture by Dr. A.L. SHARMA on "Electronics and Condensed Matter Physics"

The Department of Physics arranged an extension lecture on “Electronics and Condensed Matter Physics for M.Sc Physics 1st and 2nd year students respectively on 7th April, 2017. Dr A.L. Sharma (Assistant Professor) from Centre for Physical Sciences, Central University of Punjab, Bathinda delivered the extension lecture on “Regenerative Comparator, Square wave generator(Schmitt trigger),Triangular and Sine wave generator (Topics of Electronics)to M.sc(physics) 1st year and “Dielectric function of electron gas, Plasmon’s, Electrostatic Screening, Mott transition, Polari tons” (Topics of Condensed matter physics) to M.sc(physics) 2nd year students. He touched the in-depth concepts of the subject. The students listened him with patience and cleared their doubts in the questioning session. Students also enquired about the future and scope of M.Sc. Physics, process to get enrolled in PhD and possibility to joined research in Central University. With the humble words Dr. Sharma answered these queries and quenched their curiosity. The students feel enlightened to learn from the expert and interact with a novel personality.

Extension lecture on “Advanced Classical Mechanics and Condensed Matter Physics”

The Department of Physics arranged an extension lecture for M.Sc( Physics)1st and 2nd year students on 7th April 2017. Dr. Satnam Singh Bhamra, Assistant Professor, Maharaja Ranjit Singh Punjab technical university, Bathinda delivered the extension lectures on “Covariant formulation of relativistic mechanics, stress energy tensor and conservation laws, Lagrangian formulation in continuous system”(Topics of Advanced Classical Mechanics and Electrodynamics) to M.Sc(Physics)1st year (sem-2nd) in morning session and dislocations and its types, Burger’ s vector, stress field of dislocations, low and large angle grain boundaries, dislocation multiplication by frank read source”(Topics of Condensed Matter Physics) in evening session to M.sc(physics)2nd year (sem-4th) students. He touched the in-depth concepts of the subject. The students listened him with patience and cleared their doubts in the questioning session. The vast knowledge of the subject made our students of M.sc-physics to understand the topic in depth. The students felt enlightened to learn from the expert and interact with a novel personality.

Guest Lecture on research oriented activity and on Statistical Mechanics

On dated 31th march 2017 The Department of Physics of Baba Farid College has organized a Guest lecture for the students of M.Sc(Physics)-1st year on Statistical Mechanics The lecture was delivered by Ms. Anita Rani, Assistant Prof. of Physics in Guru Nanak Girls College Shri Muktsar Sahib. She also delivered the research oriented lecture. She motivated the students to take admission in PhD and also guided the students to take initiates to do research work through review papers and research publications.

Guest lecture on research oriented activity and on "Superconductivity"

On dated 27th march 2017 The Department of Physics of Baba Farid College has organized a Guest lecture for the students of M.Sc(Physics)-2nd year on “Superconductivity” the topic of condensed matter physics. The lecture was delivered by Dr. Asha Rani, Associate Prof. in Physics in Dev Samaj college for women in ferozepur. Respected mam explained the concept of superconductivity in detail. She also delivered the research oriented lecture. She motivated the students to take admission in PhD and also guided the students to take initiates to do research work through review papers and research publications.

Extension Lecture on Nuclear and particle physics

The Department of Physics arranged an extension lecture on “Nuclear and particle physics” for M.Sc Physics 1st year students on 24 Nov. 2016. Dr. Ritu Pasrijai (Assistant Professor) from Physics Department (PG) of D.A.V. PG College, Abohar delivered the lecture on Quark model . Dr. Pasrijai started his talk from the fundamental of topic in a very nice and innovative way, henceforth she touched the in-depth concepts of the subject. After that she explained the Sakata model. In particle physics, the Sakata model of hadrons was a precursor to the quark model. It proposed that the proton, neutron, and Lambda baryon were elementary particles and that all other known hadrons were made of them. The students listened her with patience and cleared their doubts. Dr. Pasrijai also explained SU(2) and SU(3) symmetry. She explained the advancement in research . The students felt enlightened to learn from the expert and interact with a novel personality.

Extension Lecture on "Condensed Matter Physics"

The Department of Physics arranged an extension lecture on “condensed matter physics” for M.Sc Physics 2nd year students on 18 oct. 2016. The Department of Physics arranged an extension lecture on “Electronics” for M.Sc Physics 1st year students on 18 oct. 2016. Dr A.L. Sharma (Assistant Professor) from Centre for Physical Sciences, Central University of Punjab, Bathinda delivered the lecture on multistage amplifiers. In the morning session Dr. Sharma started his talk from the fundamentals of topic in a very nice and innovative way, henceforth he touched the in-depth concepts of the subject. Dr. Sharma discussed direct coupled CE two stage amplifier, RC coupling and its analysis at mid- high and low frequency range and the Darlington circuits. The students listened him with patience and cleared their doubts in the questioning session. In the evening session Dr. Sharma motivated students by introducing the concepts and methodology of research. He explained the advancement in research and recent trends. Students also enquired about the future and scope of M.Sc. Physics, process to get enrolled in Ph.D and possibility to joined research in Central University. With the humble words Dr. Sharma answered these queries and quenched their curiosity. The students felt enlightened to learn from the expert and interact with a novel personality.

Expert lectures and Pre-University Practical by Dr. Rajesh Khatri and Dr. Manoj Kumar

The experiments are the building blocks for the theory. The science theories can be more explanatively understood by performing experiments. With this notion the department of Physics, Baba Farid College organized Pre-University Practical Examination and Guest Lectures for MSc. Physics 1st year (2nd SEM) and 2nd year (4th SEM) students on dated 05/05/2016. Dr. Rajesh Khatri, HOD (Physics) and Dr. Manoj Kumar, Assistant Professor of Physics, Department of Physics, DAV College, Abohar conducted Pre-University Practical of MSc 2nd year and 1st year students, respectively. In the morning session, both the invitees interacted with students while conducting practical viva and explained the concepts and applicability of the experiment in a different way. In the second half, Dr. Khatri delivered expert lectures to MSc Physics 2nd year students. He discussed the concepts of Condensed Matter Physics, particularly focusing the topics Plasmons, Electrostatic Shielding, and crystal defects. In an open discussion Dr. Khatri cleared the doubts and explained the queries of the students. In the parallel session Dr. Kumar discussed the basics of Power Amplifier and Application of Power Amplifier of subject Electrons. The vast knowledge of the experts made the students to understand the topics in depth.

Extension Lecture by Dr. P.S.S Sandhu on "Operational Amplifier"

One of the widely used electronic circuit/device is “Operational Amplifier” (OpAmp), which is used in our mobile, calculator, remote, radio, televisions, super computers, etc. To enhance the students knowledge, Department of Physics invited Dr. P.S.S Sandhu, Professor in Department of Physics, Punjabi University, Patiala, a renowned professor of electronics on dated March 28, 2016, to delivered an extension lecture. In his lecture he initially explained the basic concepts of the topic and thereafter the applications of the Op-Amp by correlating them with the daily life problem. Dr. Sandhu visualized the working of the Op-Amp and their applications through simulation software ‘Multisim’. The input and output directly visible on the same screen visualize and elaborated the concept in much better way. The concept of virtual instrumentation and circuits also become clear to the students. The students of M.Sc 1st year and 2nd year appreciated this way of learning and expressed their sincere gratitude toward the illustrious guest and expert.

Extension Lecture by Dr. A.L. SHARMA on “Dielectric Materials"

As a regular activity, Department of Physics arranged an extension lecture on topic “Dielectric material” of condensed matter physics for M.Sc Physics 2nd year students on 22March, 2016. Dr A.L. Sharma (Assistant Professor) from Centre for Physical Sciences, Central University of Punjab, Bathinda delivered the lecture. In the morning session Dr. Sharma started his talk from the fundamentals of topic in a very nice and innovative way, henceforth he touched the in-depth concepts of the subject. The students listened him with patience and cleared their doubts in the questioning session. In the evening session Dr. Sharma motivated students by introducing the concepts and methodology of research. He explained the advancement in research and recent trends. Students got acquainted with various techniques and characterize methods used by the scientific community now a day. Students also enquired about the future and scope of M.Sc. Physics, process to get enrolled in Ph.D and possibility to joined research in Central University. With the humble words Dr. Sharma answered these queries and quenched their curiosity. The students felt enlightened to learn from the expert and interact with a novel personality.

Interaction of Radiation with Matter & Fission and Fusion reactions

Recently Baba Farid College has organized experts lecture for the students of Physics Department for the overall development of students. Prof. (Dr.) Bhajan Singh a renowned experimental Nuclear Radiation Physics scientist was invited to deliver a guest lecture on “Interaction of Radiation with Matter” & “Fission and Fusion reactions” to M.Sc 1st & 2nd Year students of Physics. Prof. (Dr.) Bhajan Singh is a retired but working on extension in Department of Physics, Punjabi University, Patiala. He did his Ph.D from Punjabi University, Patiala. He is a life time member of various organizations such as Indian Society for Radiation Physics, Indian Association for Radiation Protection, B.A.R.C. Bombay, India Chapter of Abdus Salam International Centre for Theoretical Physics (Italy), New Delhi, Indian Society for Atomic and Molecular Physics etc. He has published 93 research papers in National/International Journals, 120 abstracts in various Conferences/Seminar/Workshop and 47 full papers in the proceedings of International/National Conferences/Seminars.
At Morning session Dr. Bhajan Singh discussed about various effects e.g. Photoelectric effect, Compton Effect and Pair production. He also discussed the pros and cons of radiations to human body and explained about the radiation dose a human body should be exposed to within the safty limits. At evening session Dr. Singh delivered expert lecture on ‘Fission and Fusion Reactions’ wherein he has discussed about various particles and their properties including Bosons, Fermions etc. He has also discussed about various forces existing in the Universe and their unification with the help of Grand Unified Theory (GUT). He enriched the students with his vast subject knowledge.

FDP on Innovations in material science by Prof. (Dr.) Ravi Kumar, Director-Principal, BCET, Gurdaspur

Dr. Ravi Kumar a renowned solid state physics scientist was invited to conduct a faculty development program on “Innovations in material science” in Department of Physics Baba Farid College on 18 August 2015 at 2.45 pm to 4.00 pm. During morning session he delivered expert lectures on Greens function and reciprocal lattice to M.Sc. Physics 1st year and M.Sc Physics 2nd year students respectively. He enriched the students with his vast subject knowledge.
Profile of Expert: Prof. (Dr.) Ravi Kumar is currently acting as Director-Principal of Beant College of Engineering and Technology ,Gurdaspur. He did his Ph.D from Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR), Mumbai. He has also worked as visiting professor at Cambridge University, U.S.A. Thereafter when he was working as senior scientist in IUAC, hehas been called indigenously to work at NIT Hamirpur for establishment of Advance Condensed Matter Physics center with in the campus.

Guest Lecture on Nuclear Physics

Department of science of Baba Farid College ,Bathinda had organised a guest lecture on subject “ Nuclear Physics” on dated March 17,2015. The resource person was Dr .Mahinderpal Singh,Principal of Pbi uni. Guru Kashi College,Talwandi Sabo.He has done Phd from Pbi.uni. Patiala.He has done research work on topic-Gamma rays.He has attended world conferences on Gamma rays.He is the first person in world to give mathematical expression for calculating effective atomic number. About 150 Students of B.Sc-III(N.M & CS) were present during this lecture.Prof. H.L Jasuja, Dean Science also attended the lecture. During his lecture he discussed all the basic concepts of gamma rays & explained various processes of interaction of gamma rays with matter like Comptom’s effect,Pair production,Photoelectric effect etc.His lecture was fully enriched with vast knowledge & valuable information. At last he was honoured with a vote of thanks by Ms. Sukhpinder Kaur(Coordinator B.Sc-ii ) .

Guest Lecture on Condensed Matter Physics and Electronics

Physics Department of Baba Farid College organized an expert lecture on Condensed Matter Physics to M.Sc. 2nd year students and on Electronics to M.Sc. 1st year students on 19-03-2015. The lecture to both the classes was delivered by Dr. Rajesh Baboria, Assistant Professor, Department of Physics, Panjab University, Chandigarh. In his expert talk on Condensed matter Physics he taught Dislocations and Burger vectors to the students. He started his topic with very basic of the crystal structure and make the concept of arrangement of atoms in the crystal clear to the students which arouse students interest in the topic. He encouraged students to interact with him and clear their doubts on the topic. He also delivered talk on oscillators to M.Sc. 1st year students. In his talk he highlighted the use of oscillators in various technological applications. Students of both the classes understand their topic in detail.

Practical Evaluation By Dr.Rajesh

Department Physics BFC invited Dr. Rajesh Khatri, Associate and H.O.D Physics, DAV College Abohar for internal evaluation of Pre-University Practicals of M.Sc Physics, 3rd SEM students. He took practical exam. He allotted practicals to students and conducted their viva-voice. It is appreciated that after taking viva, Dr. Khatri explained the fundamental principles of the experiment to respective students. In the second half Dr. Khatri delivered an expert talk on the topic Brillouin Zone in the Condensed Matter Physics. It was an impressive talk focusing the fundamentals and curriculum related content. Dr. Khatri started his talk with the concept of Bragg’s law and finally explained the concept of Brillouin zone in detail. The students were happy to learn from an external expert and cleared their doubts. The students they honoured Dr. Khatri with big blows of clapping.
